NEWS & VIEWS - SUMMER 2009

In this issue:

In each issue:

Let's have dinner!

Ben Marcy (MPP ’06)

Alumni should be the force that brings the Humphrey community of leadership together. Alumni have the stories of experience and wisdom to share, especially with students who are learning here and preparing to lead anywhere.

You have insight that can help guide students through their studies and prepare them to lead.  Here’s your opportunity to make it happen.

A student movement is preparing for an exciting new year of connecting all aspects of the Humphrey School and developing a strong community. They want you to be a part of this effort.

With the help of student services, we are working together to create a series of small alumni-sponsored potluck dinners for students throughout the year. We invite you take the opportunity to sponsor and lead a truly Minnesota-style event.

Not only is this a chance to talk about your policy interest but the story of the challenges you’ve faced reaching where you are now. These evenings will be an opportunity for honest, humorous, and serious exchange.

Let’s go to a cost benefit analysis:
Cost:
A few hours of time in the evening
Food to share (you could make it yourself or purchase –we won’t tell)

Benefits:
A chance to discuss your policy interests
An opportunity to tap into student talent
A way to network with fellow alumni through the alumni services
An evening to reminisce about your time at the Institute

I challenge you to step up and make this investment. If you are interested, contact Alumni Relations. I look forward to a positive response and the great dialogue we will have.

News from the alumni board

Scott McMahon (MPP ’03), president, Humphrey School Alumni Board of Directors

Farewell to alumni board members
Bernadine Joselyn (MPA '00) and Jim Mulder (MA '82) who both leave the alumni board this month after serving two three-year terms. Bernadine served as president in 2005 to 2006 and as a liaison to the Institute's advisory council. Additionally, she serves as a regional member on the Univerisity of Minnesota Alumni Association national board. Jim has been the Institiute's official liaison the Alumni Association's national board since 2004.
Their leadership and dedication to the board and its work have been inspirational. They will be missed. Thank you for your exceptional service, Jim and Bernadine.

Humphrey Alumni Scholarship: A new name to meet new challenges
To build on the strength of our long-standing commitment to students and help them meet the funding challenges they face, the Humphrey School Alumni Board of Directors unanimously voted at the April 2009 meeting to change the name of the Alumni Tuition Grant Program (ATGP) to the Humphrey Alumni Scholarship.

The new name, which will take effect on July 1, 2009, reflects the total financial need of students today—which is far more than simply tuition—and offers an opportunity to increase scholarship support. Watch for more information in this newsletter and on the Institute’s website throughout the year. The annual scholarship fundraising campaign will run from July 1 to June 30, 2010, with scholarships awarded to “Humphrey Alumni Scholars” next spring.

Because of the generosity of so many of you who gave to the ATGP this year, the 2008—2009 campaign reached the second-highest total since the program began almost 20 years ago. This will provide direct support to help 10 Humphrey students continue their studies in the coming academic year. It also demonstrates what we can do as alumni and friends of the Humphrey School, even in challenging times.

Since 1990, more than $500,000 in gifts and pledges have been made to the ATGP to help Humphrey students meet the rising costs of tuition and fees. Yet, those costs continue to rise at an accelerating rate. Today, tuition alone is nearly four times what it was in 1990.

Mentor corner

As new students join the Institute this fall, we look forward to getting the 23rd year of the mentor program underway. The Humphrey School alumni board, a mentor-matching committee, and Institute staff work together each year to create meaningful matches between students and mentors.

We want you!
Local alumni are invited to join the Domestic Mentor Program (DMP), which matches local mentors with students interested in domestic policy.
In this program, students and mentors access a list of available DMP mentor profiles online. Our incoming students pick DMP mentors based on the similarity of professional interests. The matching committee will then either match the student to one of his/her choices or recruit additional mentors with needed skill sets.

Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University survey: Gender wage gap

Carnegie Melon requests your help in a first-of-its-kind study of graduate students' attitudes toward learning how to improve their negotiation skills.

Research has shown that public policy/administration/international affairs graduates who are willing and able to negotiate their job offers secure appreciably higher salaries than graduates who do not. But, until now, no research has been done on students' willingness to learn how to improve their negotiation skills. This can disadvantage career services offices when they helpadvise students how to successfully navigate their career entry and progression.

This important study, led by the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University, will explore factors that (en)discourage students from taking negotiation coursework that is or may be offered to improve their individual negotiating skills. To make the results of the study useful, it is important that as many students and alumni as possible complete the survey. Therefore, because a high response rate is vitalt to a successful study, we strongly encourage you to log on today to the link below leading to the brief online survey.

While responses will be both anonymous and confidential, aggregated results will be shared with your school to help them improve their curriculum planning and student advising.

Please take the survey here. It will take you only about five minutes to complete the survey. We thank you in advance for helping us collect data that we hope will be used by your school to help you in your career!
