Barbara Lukermann passes away |
For more than 25 years, Barbara was a senior fellow and faculty member in the Humphrey School's planning program. She had a remarkable influence on the planning profession. Her research focused on land development, metropolitan planning and the links among land-use, housing, and transportation policy. Barbara was much loved for her kindness and devotion to her community, the planning profession, and her students and colleagues.
She passed away on March 22 after a short but intense bout with cancer. The Lukermann family is planning a memorial service in the coming weeks. Details will be sent to alumni via a special e-mail announcement. Memorials to the Barbara L. Lukermann Service Award Fund are preferred. It is awarded annually to students in the planning degree program for exceptional contributions to the planning community, both within the University and/or within the Twin Cities and Minnesota.

ATGP Update
From Gwen Freed (MPA ’05) and Jim Jernberg (MA ’57), co-chairs, alumni board student finance committee |
As we near the end of the 2008–2009 ATGP campaign, we would like to acknowledge the generosity and support of all of you who already have contributed this year. Despite economic hardships we all face this year, giving to the ATGP could reach its second highest level since the program began. We are both humbled and inspired by your commitment to Humphrey students.
This support is more important than ever to Humphrey students. The University of Minnesota is preparing for deep budget cuts and planning to increase tuition at least 4.5 percent for the 2009–2010 academic year. When the ATGP began, tuition costs were less than $4,000 per year. Today, the annual estimated total for tuition and fees is more than $14,000 for Minnesota residents and more than $21,000 for non-resident students. Clearly, financial assistance such as the ATGP provides is needed.
There’s still time to give to the ATGP before the campaign wraps up for 2009. This is an opportunity to help students meet increasing costs and complete their graduate degrees.
We set an ambitious goal to increase giving to the ATGP this year, and together we are making a difference. If you have not yet made your contribution, please make your gift or pledge today.
Many employers will match donations, which can double or triple the impact of a gift. Check the directory to find out if your employer is a sponsor of the matching gift program.

Overview of the 2009 legislative session
|
With Minnesota facing at least a $4.8 billion deficit for the next two years, the University is facing a challenging 2009 legislative session. For those of us who value learning, teaching, researching and serving at the U, the time is now to show the world what the state gains from the U’s continued vitality.
As President Bruininks cautioned, dramatic cuts to the U threaten to "erode the quality of the education our students receive and slow the creation of jobs and economic growth for the state by shutting off our human capital and innovation pipelines." The U draws one-fourth of its revenue from the state, and budget cuts will be an unavoidable part of the statewide solution. The depth of these cuts will determine the future well being of our University and our state.
What you can do to help the Institute and the U
It’s more important than ever for faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the U to bring our message to our 201 elected legislators and Governor Pawlenty.
We all can have a powerful impact by participating in the U’s Legislative Network. When you join, you receive frequent updates about the University’s legislative issues, as well as email action alerts to contact your local political leaders quickly and effectively on vital University issues. You can do as little or as much as your time and ambition allow—it all helps the U stay strong for the good of the state.
Please join the Legislative Network today and tell your elected leaders what protecting the University and the Humphrey School will mean to you, your peers, and our state.
