All alumni activities other than development efforts will be staffed through this office, directed by Lynne Schuman.

Michelle Potter-Bacon is out on family leave through mid-February (her new son, Birk, was born in October). In her absence, please contact Lynne Schuman (lschuman@umn.edu) or Jane Vega (jvega@umn.edu) for all alumni-related questions.

Spring break in D.C.
From Lynne Schuman, director of career services

Humphrey students will be invading Washington, D.C. again this March, and we need alumni help for a successful invasion. We’re bringing 30 students for our third annual trip to explore some of the many career options in the nation’s capital. We call this our “D.C. Career Field Trip 2009.”

Mentor program nearly doubles in size

The Humphrey alumni mentor program, now in its 22nd year, has increased from 60 student-mentor pairs to a new high of 100. In part this is a response to the program redesign, initiated by the alumni board last year. The mentor program now begins early in fall semester and runs throughout the school year (rather than being a spring semester program). Alumni leadership felt that this extension would give students and mentors more time to work together and better accommodate the legislative session, with which many mentors are involved. To cover this increase, we had to recruit 50 additional mentors. A heartfelt thank you goes to all the alumni and friends of the Institute who said “yes” when asked to mentor a Humphrey student. We couldn’t do this without our wonderful volunteers!

Job and internship postings needed

If you know of a job or internship opening that would be of interest to Humphrey students or graduates, please send it to Jane Vega at jvega@umn.edu. We post many opportunities passed on by alumni every week. These are absolutely vital to our success, and we thank you. Remember, also, that career services are open to our alumni as well as current students. Check out our website at www.hhh.umn.edu/career.

Legislative session nears

State officials announced on December 4 that Minnesota faces a revenue shortfall for the 2010–11 biennium of $4.8 billion—a drop of nearly 14 percent—plus a deficit of $426 million for the remainder of this fiscal year. The University of Minnesota receives approximately 25 percent of its operating revenue from the state. This deficit is a serious issue for the U and could have a major impact on academics, research, and workforce quality for students, faculty, and staff.

To keep informed about issues that affect the U of M during the upcoming legislative session, sign up to join the University of Minnesota Legislative Network.
