Giving: Paul and Sheila Wellstone Award for Public Action

Class of '99 Paul and Sheila Wellstone Award
Sarah Lynch (MPP ’01) Margaret Post (MPP ’99)

The Humphrey School entering class of 1999 is pleased to announce the seventh annual Paul and Sheila Wellstone Award for Public Action. As a class, we were deeply inspired by Paul and Sheila’s work toward creating a more just society. At our commencement in 2001, Paul Wellstone challenged us to act out of our convictions for the causes that matter most to us and to our community. Through their actions for equity and fairness, the Wellstones taught us to be engaged and spirited public actors.

In an effort to carry on the legacy of Paul and Sheila’s work, this award recognizes a graduating Humphrey School student who embodies their spirit, passion, and dedication. The award is presented each year at commencement and features a $500 prize. If you wish to contribute to this fund, please click here. Be sure to note that your gift is intended for the Wellstone Award in “special instructions for your gift.”

Check the alumni website later this year as highlight previous Wellstone Award recipients.

How to advocate for the U in 45 seconds a month

Join the Legislative Network and keep the U strong

Some of the U of M’s most effective advocates make their mark a few mouse clicks at a time. University allies sent more than 2,800 letters to their elected officials last year, thanks to the fast and easy online tools provided by the U’s Legislative Network (www.supporttheu.umn.edu). The results, which include passage of the $292 million Minnesota Biomedical Research Program and $105.2 million in U of M infrastructure support, speak for themselves.

With all signs pointing to a multi-billion dollar state deficit in 2009, the U will need this level of involvement and more from Legislative Network members. There has never been a better time to join the Legislative Network and demonstrate the value and relevance of the U to state legislators.

“Personal letters from constituents speak volumes in St. Paul,” says Donna Peterson, Government Relations vice-president. “The University community has a real opportunity to make itself heard through the Legislative Network.”

The U added video and social networking tools to the Legislative Network this summer. Members may now share stories and ideas collaboratively. Visit www.supporttheu.umn.edu for details.

Be an ambassador

Alumni, students, and friends of the U of M are invited to join the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs alumni society, a collegiate group of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association. As a member you are an ambassador supporting the outstanding teaching and breakthrough discoveries that happen at the U every single day.

"When you join the alumni association, you become an ambassador for the University. Members play a vital role in helping the University realize its mission of education, research, and engagement, and its goal to become one of the top three public research universities in the world," says U of M President Robert H. Bruininks.

As an alumni association member, you can take advantage of a variety of discounts and benefits, including Minnesota, the award-winning alumni magazine. You may join the alumni association online at our Humphrey School alumni society webpage, or by calling 1-800-862-5867. Your membership will help make the Institute and the University stronger.
